Stop guessing. Test it.
The AI Visibility Maturity Model describes five levels from invisible to inevitable. Each level represents a threshold of accumulated confidence that AI systems have in recommending your brand. Most brands rank themselves two levels higher than they actually are.
The only way to know your real level is to run the diagnostic.
Open ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. Work through the five tests below. You stop at the first level where the honest answer is “no.”
Test 1: Invisible to Intermittent (Retrieval)
Ask each platform a broad question about your category. Something like “what are the best platforms for [your category]” or “recommend a solution for [your use case].”
Are you named anywhere in the answer on any platform?
If you do not appear on any of the four platforms, you are at Level 1. You are invisible. Retrieval is the only thing worth working on. Check your website crawlability. Check whether AI crawlers can access your pages. Fix the structural access problem before investing in anything else.
If you appear on at least one platform, proceed to Test 2.
Test 2: Intermittent to Recognized (Recommendation)
Do you show up on all four platforms? Run the same query across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity and check whether you appear on each one.
Then test persistence. Ask a follow-up question that adds constraints: “which of those is best for a small team” or “which one works best for [specific industry].” Do you survive the follow-up?
If you appear on some platforms but not others, or if you disappear when the query gets more specific, you are at Level 2. You are intermittent. Work on recommendation consistency by aligning category language across all sources AI draws from.
If you appear consistently across all four platforms and survive follow-up questions, proceed to Test 3.
Test 3: Recognized to Trusted (Narrative)
When AI describes you, is the description accurate? Check each platform’s response for your brand specifically.
Does it state your correct category? Does it describe your actual current capabilities? Does it mention your genuine differentiators? Is there anything outdated, incorrect, or misleading in the description?
If the description is accurate on some platforms but inaccurate or uneven on others, you are at Level 3. You are recognized but not consistently well-described. Work on narrative alignment by tracing inaccurate descriptions to the specific sources AI is drawing from and updating those sources.
If AI describes you accurately and consistently across all platforms, proceed to Test 4.
Test 4: Trusted to Inevitable (Evidence)
Ask the AI platforms “what sources support that recommendation” or “why do you recommend [your brand].” Does the recommendation lean on independent, earned evidence rather than just your own website?
Check whether AI cites G2 reviews, analyst reports, comparison articles, or customer testimonials from third-party sources. If AI’s recommendation is based primarily on your own website content, your evidence confidence is limited.
If independent sources do not support the recommendation, you are at Level 4. You are trusted based on your own content but not independently corroborated. Work on building evidence through review generation, analyst outreach, and comparison content inclusion.
If independent evidence corroborates the recommendation, proceed to Test 5.
Test 5: Inevitable (Memory)
Run the same set of queries again next week. After the current month’s model updates have settled, are you still there? Still described the same way? Still recommended with the same confidence?
Persistence through change is the only real test of Level 5. A brand that appears strongly today but disappears after a model update has recommendation confidence but not memory confidence.
Level 5 is not a single test. It is the ongoing observation that your position holds through platform changes, competitive shifts, and evidence updates over time.
What Your Level Tells You
Each level prescribes a specific focus.
Level 1 means work on retrieval. Fix crawlability. Make your site accessible to AI systems. Nothing else matters until this works.
Level 2 means work on recommendation consistency. Align category language across all sources. Close the gaps that cause some platforms to include you and others to skip you.
Level 3 means work on narrative accuracy. Trace inaccurate descriptions to their sources. Update the specific references AI is drawing from.
Level 4 means work on independent evidence. Invest in G2 reviews, analyst coverage, comparison article presence, and customer advocacy.
Level 5 means maintain everything. Monitor for drift. Update evidence regularly. Adapt to platform changes.
The most important thing the test reveals is not the level itself. It is the instinct to argue with the result. If you expected Level 4 and the test says Level 2, that gap between expectation and reality is exactly the kind of diagnostic insight this model is designed to surface.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the maturity test take?
The five-step diagnostic takes approximately five minutes. Open ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity and work through the tests in order. Stop at the first level where the answer is “no.”
What if I get different levels on different platforms?
That is common and diagnostically useful. It means your AI visibility is fragmented. Focus on the platform where you are weakest because that represents your actual floor, not your strongest platform.
How often should I run this test?
Monthly for routine monitoring. Immediately after any significant change to your website, content, or competitive landscape. And after known model updates from major AI platforms.
What if my test results change week to week?
That indicates you are in the intermittent zone (Level 2). Consistent visibility across sessions is what separates Level 2 from Level 3. The variability itself is the diagnostic signal.
Can I use this test for competitors?
Yes. Running the same queries for competitors reveals their maturity level and shows where you have advantages or gaps. A competitor at Level 4 with strong evidence corroboration is a different competitive challenge than one at Level 2 with intermittent visibility.
Is there a tool that automates this test?
The manual version takes five minutes and provides immediate diagnostic value. Axis Suite automates this diagnostic process across all four platforms with buyer-intent queries, five-layer analysis, and competitive comparison.
