Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations fell 86.4 percent this month, and that number cannot tell you what happened to your brand.
Both halves of that sentence are important.
What the data actually says
According to tracking firm Promptwatch, Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations fell from a 3.83 percent average between July 18 and August 7 to 0.52 percent between August 14 and 17.
It happened in two stages. A first decline on August 8, then a sharper collapse on August 14.
The leading explanation is that ChatGPT changed its background search behavior on August 8, with site-specific queries rising from 0.37 percent to 16.8 percent of fanout queries. That is roughly a 46-fold increase and a substantial real change.
It also does not account for the second decline six days later. Nobody has explained that gap.
There is precedent for the ambiguity. A similar Reddit citation collapse in September 2025 was eventually attributed to Google removing its num=100 search parameter, which had nothing to do with Reddit or OpenAI at all.
The caveat most coverage dropped
Promptwatch, in the same report that produced the headline, said the size of the drop is provisional and that they cannot yet rule out a data-collection issue on their own end.
That is unusual and it deserves saying plainly. They had the most shareable figure in AI search that week and they attached the caveat that undercuts it.
The IAB published Measuring Visibility in the AI Era on August 3, defining decision-grade measurement as requiring reproducibility, disclosed variation ranges, sample sufficiency and methodology transparency. Most of the industry read that as a standard someone would eventually have to enforce. A vendor did it voluntarily three weeks later, on a number that would have been considerably more useful to them uncaveated.
If you take one thing from the reporting rather than the data, take that.
Why an aggregate cannot answer your question
A category-wide citation share is an average across an enormous and uneven set of queries.
It tells you something real about the category. It cannot tell you what happened to any individual brand, because your citations come from a specific set of queries in a specific vertical, and nothing about the aggregate guarantees your slice moved with it.
A brand whose Reddit citations came from three highly specific threads in a niche subreddit may have seen no change at all. Another may have lost more than 86 percent.
The distance between “this happened in the category” and “this happened to us” is where most bad strategy decisions get made, in every channel, every year.
What to actually do this week
Measure your own citation set. Run the buying questions that matter to you against ChatGPT, and separately against Perplexity, Claude and Gemini. Record which sources are cited. Compare against whatever record you have from July. If you have no July record, that is the more urgent finding.
Check concentration, not just presence. The question is not whether Reddit appears. It is what share of your citations it was carrying. A brand with one Reddit citation out of twelve sources has a very different exposure from a brand with eight out of twelve.
Do not rebuild a strategy on one week of one platform. Google, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews all still exist and none of them made this change. A source losing weight in one engine is not the same as that source becoming worthless.
Treat this as a concentration lesson rather than a Reddit lesson. Any single source can lose most of its weight in under a week, for reasons that are not visible from outside and may not even be about that source. That is the durable finding here, and it applies to whichever source you are most dependent on right now.
The measurement lesson underneath the news
If your AI visibility reporting could not have answered “what share of our citations came from Reddit in July” this week, the citation drop is not your most pressing problem.
The IAB’s line from earlier this month applies directly: single-response measurement is not measurement. A single snapshot cannot tell you what changed, because it has nothing to compare against.
The brands that could answer the Reddit question this week were the ones already recording their citation set over time. Everyone else read a category aggregate and guessed.
Why citation share was never the whole picture anyway
There is a further reason not to over-read a citation share number in either direction.
Research published by Similarweb in June found that more than 56 percent of AI-influenced traffic arrived through branded search rather than as a referral click, against roughly 40 percent for standard visits. A separate preprint from Scrunch AI, posted in June, joined opt-in clickstream data to real ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini conversations and found that among users with no recent engagement with a brand, a recommendation moved branded search by 4.3 percentage points against 1.8 for a neutral mention.
The effect of being cited shows up substantially in search behavior rather than in clicks. Which means citation counts, referral traffic and citation share are all partial views of something that mostly lands somewhere else.
A change in a category is a reason to look. It is not a finding about you.
FAQ
Did Reddit’s ChatGPT citations really drop 86 percent?
That is the figure Promptwatch reported, from a 3.83 percent average share down to 0.52 percent. Promptwatch also described the size of the drop as provisional and said a data-collection issue on their end has not been ruled out, so the direction is better supported than the exact magnitude.
What caused the drop?
It is not fully explained. A change in ChatGPT’s background search behavior on August 8 increased site-specific queries roughly 46-fold, but that does not account for a second, sharper decline on August 14.
Should I stop investing in Reddit for AI visibility?
Not on the basis of one week of one platform. Google, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews all still retrieve Reddit content, and the change has not been shown to be permanent or intentional.
How do I find out whether my own brand was affected?
Run your key buying questions against ChatGPT now and compare the cited sources against a record from before August 8. Without a prior record you can establish a new baseline, but you cannot answer the question retroactively.
Has this happened before?
Yes. A similar Reddit citation collapse occurred in September 2025 and was eventually attributed to Google removing its num=100 search parameter, an external change unrelated to either Reddit or OpenAI.
What is the safest response to a source losing weight in an engine?
Check what share of your citations that source was carrying, and whether the rest of your evidence would still support your position without it. Concentration is the risk, not the specific platform.
ABOUT AXIS SUITE
Axis Suite by TrendAxis is the independent intelligence layer that explains what AI believes about your brand, why it believes it, and what decision that belief ultimately drives.
Most tools count citations. Axis Suite tells you which of those citations are actually evidence about you, how many separate parties they represent, and what would remain if your largest source disappeared.
